Today Kaiti, the newest member of our wine blog team here at Woodinville Wine Blog, was reading about this year’s food trend where savory charcuterie chalets are replacing gingerbread houses. Charcuterie chalets are popping up all over social media! She was fascinated, and spent a bit of time exploring charcuterie chalets on YouTube.
Kaiti thought it would be hilarious to make a savory vegan charcuterie chalet to nibble at while sipping her wines from our local Woodinville tasting room visits. She’s gluten-free, not vegan, but thought it would be funny and more challenging to make a vegan chalet. She figured if she struggled with the vegan concept she could always back down and make it vegetarian.
Kaiti ran to the store to pick up fake meat, Tofurky, vegan cheese, a few herbs and veggies, and gluten-free crackers. She then spent the rest of the day planning, cutting, designing, building, decorating, photographing, filming, and then cleaning up her trashed kitchen!
A gluten-free cracker path winds past the Farmhouse Red Truck (made of faux cheese and vegan bologna) up to the edible door of the Chalet. She made a little vegan cheese ball snowman too!
She wanted the grounds of the Chalet to look festive, so Kaiti created snow from vegan feta, rolled up gluten-free bread to make fence posts, topped them with festive “Christmas lights” made out of tomatoes and Kalamata olives, and wreathed the fence with rosemary sprigs.
To celebrate her accomplishment, Kaiti opened her bottle of “Lill Bebe” Rosé wine from our recent visit to Chateau Lill.
We recommend pairing your Vegan Charcuterie Chalet, should you choose to make one for yourself, with vegetarian wine from Glacier View Cellars in Woodinville’s Artisan Hill wine district. The faux meats and cheeses would also go well with sparkling wine, juicy white wines like Viognier, and of course, Rosé.
