Today, August 28, is National Red Wine Day. We thought we’d share some of our favorite local spots to taste and purchase delicious red wines grown, bottled and made in Washington. We can’t list everybody, so these are just our current favorites at the moment.
Woodinville West Valley District:
Cascade Cliffs makes so many of my favorite red wines, I need to break down and fork over the $ commitment to join their wine club. Nebbiolo, Barbera, and other red varietals (unfortunately their website doesn’t provide info on their wines).
Celaeno Winery has incredibly good Syrah, and don’t miss out on their Pinot Noir.
Martedi Winery just blows us away with their incredible Italian style wines. Buy one of everything, seriously.
The Winemakers Reserve has a rotating selection from local wineries. Highlights include Matteo and 425 Cellars.
Woodhouse Wine Estates offers reserve red wines from Kennedy Shah. We prefer La Vie en Rouge.
The Gateway District in Woodinville:
This strip mall by the Hampton Inn Woodinville features Lake Chelan’s famous Tsillan Cellars (try their Sangiovese!); the highly acclaimed Avennia Winery (we like their “Valery” Bordeau blend); and Walla Walla’s Tertulia Cellars, where we worship their Carmenere and Mourvedre.
At The Hollywood Station, you already know about DeLille Cellars and Sparkman Cellars!
The Junction Woodinville:
Three of our favorite Walla Walla wineries are located in this strip mall by Shake Shack and Locust Cider: Armstrong Family Winery (try Bogie’s Blend); Beaumont Cellars (they make a Zinfandel!); and Five Star Cellars (try their Malbec and their “Quinque Astrum” Super Tuscan blend).
Artisan Hill in Woodinville:
We really could mention just about any of the wineries here – so many fabulous places! Kevin White Winery is developing a cult following; I just gave in to temptation and joined Three of Cups Winery; Callan Cellars makes my favorite local Meritage; I can’t get enough of Descendant Cellars‘ Mourvedre; Pomum Cellars makes fantastic Spanish-style wines (don’t miss “Shya Red”); and Lobo Hills is known for their Right Bank and Left Bank blends and Syrah.
The Woodinville Warehouse District:
Stop by Adrice Wines for their Malbec and Syrah; Michael Florentino Cellars has Spanish style and Italian style wines; run into Love That Red Winery for Syrah and Grenache; Warr-King Wines has Malbec and Syrah you won’t want to miss out on; I’m partial to Barrage Cellars‘ Merlot and Cabernet Franc; and fans of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc should stop into Wit Cellars.
Woodinville’s Hollywood District:
Market Vineyards has incredible red blends and a good Malbec.
J. Bookwalter Wines has so many good red wines you’ll leave broke. We recommend the “Protagonist” Cabernet Sauvignon and “Suspense” Cabernet Franc.
Maryhill Winery has 32 varietals of wine, so you’ll find plenty of red wine choices. We like their Zinfandel, their Cinsaut, and their Sangiovese especially.
Alexandria Nicole Cellars – I’m a club member here, and my favorite is “Quarry Butte.” You’ll probably really enjoy their Jet Black Syrah too.
Long Shadows is known for their incredible wines. Try their “Pirouette.”
Chandler Reach Vineyards often sells out of their fantastic red wines, so grab their “Brevetatta,” Cabernet Sauvignon, and “Villa Rosso” while you still can. I’m still dreaming of their club-member-only Carmenere!
In the Apple Farm Village, stop by Torii Mor for life-changing Oregon Pinot Noir and Zerba Cellars for their Walla Walla red wines, including a great Barbera.
Dusted Valley is known for their “Stained Tooth Syrah.”
Fidelitas makes really excellent Red Mountain red wines.
Lachini Vineyards and Panther Creek Cellars offer delicious Oregon Pinot Noirs.
Jen and I are both fans and admirers of aMaurice Cellars, known for their “Fred” Syrah with the hummingbird on the label.
Cave B Estate Winery makes so many good reds, including a Barbera, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Merlot, and more.
Brian Carter Cellars has won so many awards for their red wines, including “Tuttorosso,” “Byzance” and “Corrida.”
You already know about Mark Ryan Winery, Patterson Cellars and Gorman Winery and their great red wines!
Happy wine tasting and wine shopping on National Red Wine Day! See you in Woodinville!
