Introducing Friends to the Fabulous Wines at Savage Grace

On Sunday I was wine tasting in Woodinville’s Warehouse District with a small handful of friends. (Luckily there were only five of us, as tasting rooms generally prefer you to make an advance reservation if your party is six people or more).

My friends had never been to Savage Grace, and wanted to taste some intriguing wines. I knew Savage Grace would have some surprises for them.

We met the knowledgeable and friendly tasting room associate, Leslie, and caught a few glimpses of busy winemaker Michael Savage as he passed through a few times, occupied with winemaking chores.

A couple of us purchased the 2017 Côt (the French version of Malbec). We also really enjoyed the Gruner Veltliner, which I hadn’t seen offered in Woodinville before. (Leslie told me they make one over at W.T. Vintners as well).

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon was a reliable hit, as I suspected it would be. It’s sourced from grapes grown at Red Willow Vineyard near Yakima. My friends also enjoyed tasting the Cabernet Franc.

As we tasted, Leslie familiarized the rest of my party with Savage Grace’s winemaking techniques, focusing on the natural, minimal intervention approach. I could have cheered when she said their chardonnay is put into neutral oak, then fermented in stainless to prevent it from tasting too oaky.

None of us ended up purchasing the rosé (perhaps we were finally rosé’d out from the recent National Rosé Day festivities?).

However, we all exclaimed over the surprising dry Orange Gewurztraminer. I’m not a fan of Gewurztraminer, which is usually far too sweet for me. I bought this to gift to an aunt, but am reconsidering being so generous with her, and greedily sharing it with myself instead! I remember that this one usually sells out, so I’m glad I came in to buy a bottle while I still could!
